DIY Crystal Iron Orb Chandelier

I just love chandeliers! I would have one in every room if my husband would let me ;) I think they add class and charm to a room with very little effort! Sometime last year, we were walking by Restoration Hardware and saw this absolutely stunning orb chandelier with lots of sparkly crystals! It was just breathtaking! I peeked at the price tag and saw a whopping $2,295.00. Whoa, that's a lot of money to spend on ceiling lighting, even if it is breathtaking. I was determined to recreate that piece at a much more affordable price, and that brings us to today's post!

I lucked out at one of my shopping trips to Homegoods, and scored an iron orb for only $24.99! I was so stinkin' excited, I think I literally squealed!! Next, I headed to Lowe's and picked up hanging light, similar to this one for less than $40. Once I was home, my husband drilled a hole through the iron orb on one end and fed the light cord through, and then we hung it! And when I say "we", I mean my husband ;)

I was absolutely thrilled with how it turned out with such little effort! We kept it that way for a little while before I added crystals. I bought my crystals from Save On Crafts.com, click here for crystals! Let me warn you, if you haven't been to this site before, brace yourself, you're going to be browsing for hours! Their prices are incredible and their stuff is great quality! I bought stuff for my wedding from there and that's why I decided to go back!

Anyways, I bought 2 6 foot strands of crystal garland. I began to play around with a design, attaching the crystals to the orb using fish-line and knotting it. I had about 2 feet of crystals left, so I didn't use them all. On another occasion, I was at Hobby Lobby and spotted some raindrop crystals in a 3-pack and snatched those up real quick using my 40% off coupon! Once I got home and showed them to my husband, he opened them up and realized they were magnetic, even better!! Again, I may have squealed with excitement :)

This project cost me a total of $88!!! It's not as fancy as the Restoration Hardware chandy, but it's so beautiful and the perfect addition over our kitchen table!

So, what do you think?

  11. You have a great eye seeing the orb as a light fixture, it never fails to amaze me how crafters/bloggers can turn one thing into something different that's decorative and useable. You and your hubs did a fantastic job making your one of a kind light fixture. Bravo. Happy days.

  16. Just found you from Red Head Can Decorate over on FB. I had to stop by because I just purchased an orb just like this from HG!:) I bought it for our urn on the front porch but kept thinking how it would make a fabulous light fixture. I was not sure of how to drill the hole thru the end. Yours turned out beautiful!
